Johan Botha belongs to the most important singers of our time and performs continuously at the most important opera houses, concert halls and festivals worldwide.

The South African Tenor studied in his native country and made his debut in Roodeport, before moving to Europe in 1990, where his international career quickly developed after first engagements in Germany. Amongst other venues he performed at the opera houses in Berlin, the state operas in Dresden, Hamburg and Munich, at the Gran Teatro del Liceu, at the Lyric Opera Chicago, at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, in Los Angeles, San Francisco, at the Teatro alla Scala, at the Opéra Bastille and the Théâtre Châtelet in Paris, in Sydney and at the Salzburger Festspiele.

Since 1997, he regularly performs at the Metropolitan Opera and since his debut in 1996, he is strongly connected with the Wiener Staatsoper, where he sang, amongst other roles, Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos, Daphne and Frau ohne Schatten, Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, Verdi’s Don Carlo, Vespri Siciliani, Aida and Otello, Beethoven’s Fidelio, Wagner’s Lohengrin, Parsifal, Die Walküre, Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Der fliegende Holländer and Tannhäuser, Puccini’s Tosca and Turandot. In summer 2010 Johan Botha made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival in the role of Siegmund under the baton of Christian Thielemann. A few years later he returned in the same role for the new production of Der Ring des Nibelungen under the baton of Kirill Petrenko (2013-2015).

Apart from his opera appearances, he regularly sings at concerts all over the world and collaborates with the most prestigious conductors, such as Abbado, Barenboim, Boulez, Bychkov, de Billy, Dohnany, Gatti, Gergiev, Jansons, Levine, Maazel, Pappano, Petrenko, Sinopoli, Solti, Welser-Möst, Thielemann, Weigle, Young and many others.

In 2004 Johan Botha was awarded with the title of “Kammersänger”. In June 2012 he was appointed ambassador of the Blue-Shield-Foundation.

There exists a rich number of CD and DVD recordings, such as complete recordings of Lohengrin, Meistersinger, Walküre, Parsifal, Aida, Otello, Turandot, Daphne and various solo albums.
